Capturing the Foreclosure Crisis

In his career as an award-winning photojournalist, Anthony Suau has seen a lot of troubling images: famine in Ethiopia, demonstrations in South Korea, and the conflict in Chechnya.

Now he has turned his lens to America, capturing images of the current economic and foreclosure crisis.

Just before leaving for Amsterdam to receive the prestigious 2008 World Press Photo Award, Anthony Suau went to Spanish Harlem to photograph Feed The Children’s food distribution to struggling families in the area.

There, Leica Camera joined with Suau to document the event and Suau’s ongoing coverage of the economic crisis in the U.S. Click here to watch video of the event and to see Suau’s prize-winning images depicting the foreclosure crisis.

Too Many Towns Like Elkhart

Right now, America has too many towns suffering like Elkhart, Indiana.  Industrial towns filled with hardworking people that have been hit with a one-two punch of globalization and recession.

Elkhart relies heavily on revenue from manufacturing, and in particular, revenue from recreational vehicles.

But with the struggling US economy, the recreation industry is in trouble.  And as the “RV Capital of the World,” Elkhart is feeling the pain of recession more than most towns.  Unemployment has risen to over 18%, with no relief in sight.

Elkhart, “the city with a heart,” is at risk of having its own heart broken.

Feed The Children recently provided thousands of struggling families in Elkhart with boxes of food and essentials.  But there are many “Elkharts” in America right now, and we need your help in reaching these towns with our Americans Feeding Americans Emergency Caravan™.  The Caravan targets communities like Elkhart that have been devastated by massive layoffs and unemployment.

Watch this video and see how you can help communities like Elkhart cope during this difficult time.

Goats: An Enduring Gift

For generations, the Masaai tribe in East Africa has been a picture of resilience in the face of adversity.  The semi-nomadic Masaai tribe has been able to survive in harsh, inhospitable environments by relying on their livestock for essential nutrients.

Milk constitutes a major part of the Masaai diet.  However, in recent years Masaai herds have diminished, making this important dietary staple scarcer.  The Masaai have managed to retain many of their age-old customs and dress, but their traditional food sources are now at risk.

To help the Masaai tribe remain self-sufficient, Feed The Children supporters helped us supply the tribe with a number of goats.  These goats are able to survive in even the most barren climates while producing quarts of milk a day for the Masaai people.

In addition to life-saving milk, goats can help supply additional income for the tribe.  Owners can sell surplus milk or cheese, as well as any offspring the goat produces.

Watch this video and see how the gift of a goat can transform lives.
